It’s hard to say which is more stressful, midterms or finals. I would say midterms. It’s true that finals week is dense, but at least you get them over with and have no worries afterwards. Midterms will seemingly drag on forever and sometimes professors decide to switch dates on you, which they can’t do with finals. For finals week, you know it’s time to buckle down and get serious because this is your last shot and you have an exam every day. Then there’s a nice, long, assignment-free break to look forward to.

UK Cops Arrest 19 After Offering Them Free Beer

abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/11/uk-cops-arrest-19-…

How do you crack a cold case? Try a cold case.

Nineteen Britons wanted on various crimes were arrested after being offered free beer by police in an undercover operation, according to Derbyshire (U.K.) Constabulary.
Dozens of suspects – for crimes including robbery and sexual assault — got letters from a marketing firm inviting them to call the company in exchange for a free case of beer, police said.

The calls were put through to officers at Chesterfield Police Station, who arranged a time to deliver the beer at the caller’s home, police said. At the appointed time and place, the caller was arrested.

“These suspects are people who have managed to evade arrest for some time, so we have used different tactics to find them,” said Chief Inspector Graham McLaughlin. “It has been very cost-effective, as it can take a lot of time and money to track people down.”

The operation was part of Operation Rocky, which targets “serious acquisitive crime across north Derbyshire,” a police statement said.

…..item 2)… MILLER HIGH LIFE — GOOD CALL !!! …

She told me we couldn’t afford beer anymore and i’d have to quit. Then i caught her spending on makeup. And i asked how come i had to give up stuff and she didn’t. She said she needed the makeup to look pretty for me. I told her that was what the beer was for. I don’t think she’s coming back……..

Good Call !!!

It’s the most horrible time of the year. When your heads are all swelling and everyone’s telling you, “I need a beer.”

Now that the calendar is inching toward mid-February, midterms are slowly returning with a vengeance. After a nice honeymoon period where we could just sit back, let our professors ramble on, and then go home and sleep, we have to hit the books—and hit them hard. Suddenly, the lists of events on “Fridays at the Union” posters are smaller and the lines of cars around campus are longer. Little by little, class sizes are more closely resembling the high numbers they were given on Blackboard.

Midterms are an invisible elephant in the room; there’s no designated week for them like finals, but at the same time, we all know when they’re here. We know when trying to find an outlet at Strozier is like looking for a needle in a haystack, and when the frisbee throwers on Landis are suddenly replaced with blankets and books. We know when the one place on campus that isn’t full of people is the gym. For the past two weeks, the Leach went from being constantly packed to slightly less than the usual crowd. Walkinf around campus, you can hear students buzzing about upcoming exams.

Whereas with midterms, you might have one or two, and then it’s three weeks before you have another one, and it’s easy to fall back into the old habits of procrastination and laziness that have been plaguing you all semester. Then when the week of your next exam finally rolls around, your other professors decide to make that their quiz and paper week. No wonder class sizes are occasionally cut in half afterwards.

It’ll be interesting to see how the crowds on campus will change over the next couple of weeks. On the one hand, they may rise and drop from one day to the next, or they might remain constant until spring break (which I’m sure we’re already dying for). It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when the craziness of the season will end, it really depends on course load and how generous professors are feeling. I’ve had tests range from multiple-choice take-home to inhumanely difficult short answer with time constraints that clearly lacked any sign of compassion.

The best advice I can offer is to keep your eyes on Spring Break—and hope you don’t get any tests upon your return.
