Me and Mumsy
relationship advice

Paris, circa 1981

I have a really wonderful relationship with my mom and I’m so lucky in that regard. She never tried to be my friend when I was growing up and for that I am glad because our relationship has morphed into a friendship since I’ve become an adult and I cherish that. She has shown me in many ways how to be a good person and a strong, independent woman. And I have a good idea of many things that I plan to do when we eventually have kids, based on how she raised me.

Now we are more like friends and I treasure our friendship so very much. I can call her any time with a silly story or to ask advice and she always says the right thing. I always look forward to seeing her and I relish the trips she takes to NYC for Garden Club of America when I get to see her for a few hours for lunch before she heads back to DC on the train.

She is funny and goofy and smart and artistic and an amazing gardener and she has a great eye for color and she keeps two absolutely beautiful houses.

I look forward to spending a few days with her and my dad this weekend where we can enjoy good food, good wine and be as silly as we want and not be judged.

I am so thankful that I have her in my life.
