Personal Quotes
On Donatella Versace: She’s iconic and powerful, yet people throw darts at her. She’s definitely provocative.

Some artists are working to buy the mansion or whatever the element of fame must bear, but I spend all my money on my show.

I was the arty girl, the theatre chick. I dressed differently and I came from a different social class from the other girls. I was more of an average schoolgirl with a cork.

On her style: My grandmother is basically blind, but she can make out the lighter parts, like my skin and hair. She says, "I can see you, because you have no pants on." So I’ll continue to wear no pants so that my grandma can see me.

You must never ever let a guy know how much you like him, because then he’ll run in the other direction … Well, I just sign that when you don’t play hard to get, if you’re too easy or you come off too eager, they run away so you gotta keep your pokerface on.

I love Dolce & Gabbana. I love Versace. I love the crazy, more eccentric stuff. I can’t pay my rent, but I’m f—ing gorgeous.

I dropped out of NYU, moved out of my parent’s house, got my own place, and survived on my own. I made music and worked my way from the bottom up. I didn’t know somebody, who knew somebody, who knew somebody. If I have any advice to anybody, it’s to just do it yourself, and don’t waste time trying to get a favor.

Writing a record is like dating a few men at once. You take them to the same restaurants to see if they measure up, and at some point you decide who you like best. When you make music or write or create, it’s really your job to have mind-blowing, irresponsible, condomless sex with whatever idea it is you’re writing about at the time.

My album covers are not sexual at all, which was an issue at my record label. I fought for months, and I cried at meetings. They didn’t think the photos were commercial enough… In my opinion, the last thing a young woman needs is another picture of a sexy pop star writhing in sand, covered in grease, touching herself.

[on Britney Spears] Britney’s a real class act in terms of the way she handles herself in the media and embraces new artists. She’s always really kind, I’ve always admired that about her.

[on Britney Spears] It was awesome seeing the song change when she put her touches on it. I’m just really grateful that she loves the music and she’s so supportive of me. She’s a fan of my stuff and to write a song that she loves and to know she loves me as an artist, you can’t ask for anything better than that.

[on Britney Spears] She’s gonna kick everybody’s ass. She’s awesome, as far as I’m concerned Britney never left.

[on writing the song Quicksand for Britney Spears] She was very sweet and she was very excited to do this song. It’s an honor to do anything for Britney Spears – she is such an iconic pop figure for my generation.

I am not sexy in the way that Britney Spears is sexy – which is a compliment to her because she’s deliciously good-looking.

[on writing songs for Britney Spears] She’s a nice girl – I just feel very honored that she wanted to sing my song. I used to scream for her in Times Square and now I work for her. When I was 13 she was the most provocative performer of my time. I love her so much!

[on Britney Spears] Britney certainly doesn’t need any freaking tips from me! Britney Spears is the queen of pop. I was learning from her.

I would rather die than have my fans not see me in a pair of high heels. I’d never give up my wigs or hats for anything. You see legendary people taking out their trash, I think it’s destroying show business.

[about her experience at school] I had a very big nose, very curly brown hair and I was overweight. I got made fun of.

Pop music will never be low brow.

[on how to be glamorous for a photo shoot] Just look straight into that lens and be yourself.

Be yourself and love who you are and be proud. Because you were born this way baby.

People assume that when I’m off stage I transform back into someone else. But I truly believe in the glamorous lifestyle that I present to the outside world. I love glamor. A glamorous life is quite different to a life of luxury. I don’t need luxury. For years I was practically broke but I was still vain and glamorous.

[on Freddie Mercury]: Freddie was unique – one of the biggest personalities in the whole of pop music.

Everywhere I go a Gaga fairy has been there before me and left a cupboard full of wonderful clothes that I’m allowed to borrow and wear. When I move on to the next city, the next cupboard is waiting. I haven’t been shopping myself for over a year now.

She is the queen, Madonna is the queen. I have so much adoration for her. Being compared to her is unbelievably flattering, but in truth there is no one that can compare with Madonna. She is the queen!

First thing in the morning, try to think compassionate thoughts about yourself for five minutes. I don’t always do it, but I try to.

[on sleeping with her makeup still on] I’ve got to wash my face at some point. I do get laughed at quite a bit by all my friends because they say I go to sleep a lot with my make-up on. But I say that I have to be ready for the men in my dreams!

They’d say, ‘Why do you do your make-up like that, what’s with your eyebrows?’ I used to do these really big Evita brows. I used to self-tan, and I had this really intense tan in school, and people would say, ‘Why the fuck are you so orange, why do you do your hair that way, are you a dyke?’ I used to be called a slut… I didn’t even want to go to school sometimes.

…..item 1)…. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES … ‘Hairy Crazy Ants’ invade American South from Florida to Texas …

BY IBTimes Staff Reporter | October 04 2011 2:10 PM

www.ibtimes.com/%E2%80%98hairy-crazy-ants%E2%80%99-invade…

From Texas to Florida, several southern states in the U.S. are abuzz with reports of hairy crazy ants.

It sounds like the premise for a Hollywood horror film: crazy ants invade the southern United States.

As their moniker implies, the flea-sized critters are called crazy because of how rapidly they scramble around. They’re called hairy because of a thin layer of fuzz that sets them apart from their glossy-looking brethren.

The little biters will eat just about anything, plant or animal. Unlike many ants, they don’t dig out anthills, rather preferring to nest in sheltered, moist spots.

They also pack a nasty bite. The ants are aggressive and capable of swarming en masse, according to Roger Gold, an entomology professor at Texas A&M. The second an ant is killed, its death releases a chemical clue to attack a threat to the colony, Gold told The AP.

The other ants rush in. Before long, you have a ball of ants, he added.

The ants are on the move in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. In Texas, they have invaded homes and industrial complexes and thrive in both urban and rural areas.

The critters travel in motorcycles, moving vans, potted plants, hay bales, and more. They are even known to short out industrial equipment.

So where do these ants come from and why are they attacking in the American South?

The hairy crazy ant – yes that’s the actual name – is a semi-tropical ant that’s expanding its territory. The insect is migrating northward and climate change appears to be the big driver.

Likely a native of South America, the ants were found in the Caribbean by the late 19th century where there are commonly known as Caribbean crazy ants,

The crazy ants aren’t exactly new. There were a few isolated reports in Florida before 2000, and exterminators reported some of the first Texas specimens of the species in the Huston area back in 2002.

However, their population has grown dramatically over the past decade.

Now, 20 counties in Florida, 18 counties in Texas, two counties in Mississippi and one in Louisiana report issues with the crazy pests – and exterminating them isn’t easy.

Gold told the AP that for every 100,000 killed by pesticides, millions more will follow.

What are the health risks?

It was just proven at Texas A&M University that the ants actually transfer pathogens from one room to another. This is a major problem because they’ve been found at medical centers in Huston.

They can also destroy up to 95% of both insect and reptile populations on properties that they infest and can even decimate beehives, a major problem for several small honey farmers.

The infestation does have a silver lining. The crazy ants are wiping out populations of the pesky stinging fire ant.

Yet, many locals would take the fire ant over the crazy ant any day as fire ants form easily avoidable colonies while crazy ants run, amok, or should I say crazy,

GAINESVILLE — University of Florida researchers are still working on strategies for controlling crazy ants found so far in 20 Florida counties, but they’re offering some preliminary advice.

They advised homeowners on Thursday to seek professional help because crazy ants are difficult to eradicate.

The golden-brown invaders from the Caribbean and South America run around erratically and cause property damage but don’t sting like fire ants.

Fire ant baits don’t work well because they contain oil to attract those fat-loving pests. Their crazy cousins hate oil.

Researchers also advise homeowners to remove leaves and other yard litter where the insects like to nest. They also should fix leaky outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems and minimize standing water sources.

Extermination efforts work best in February and March before the breeding season begins.

Franco Again
dating advice

Franco said that, unlike the last time I took his picture, this time he’d try to look a bit less like he wanted me dead (see comment below for original.) I think he mostly succeeded. Mostly.

So sometimes I vanity google. I license a lot of my images Creative Commons: Attribution, so they get uploaded to plenty of Royalty Free sites, where they occasionally get reused. I’m fine with this — I’m happy when someone can use my images to illustrate some new content they’re generating. I only wish there were some way short of vanity googling that I could find out when they’re being used. But, I can’t think of an easy way, so it is what it is.

In any case I was pretty pleased the other day to find one of my self portraits illustrating "The Older Guy" type on a dating blog post. One of the things I had tried to catch in the original image (see comment below) was my wrinkles — my middle age. That usage of the image tells me that at least one other person got that aspect of the image.

Advice received from djfloryan_aguillar is that the vessel name Sardinella was a
research ship/vessel owned by the University of the Philippines in the visayas (UPV). and the university uses it for marine research.

Relationship Advice from the 1940′s: Dating Do’s and Don’ts DVD (1949)

Relationship Advice from the 1940′s: Dating Do’s and Don’ts DVD (1949)

Dating in the 1950′s! Dating Do’s and Don’ts is one of the greatest examples of 1950′s culture ever acquired. This famous film takes teens through the gauntlet of rigid rules for dating, from asking the right girl to how to say good night. Alan Woodruff, otherwise known as “Woody” receives two tickets to the Hi-Teen Carnival and is suddenly confronted with the realization that he must ask a girl out. He settles on Ann Davis since she “knows how to have a good time.” As their date progresses, the

The New Explore
dating advice

Many Flickrites have been complaining about how difficult it is to get into Explore since Flickr made changes to Explore (and Interestingness) around August 20. Here’s my best guess as to what changed, and what Interestingness depends on.

First, I believe Flickr is updating Explore less frequently during the day. This de facto means less people are getting into Explore. Further, since the ones that do get into Explore stay there longer, they get more visits, comments, and faves, and are able to stay there yet longer. The top 50 photos in Explore have a LOT of views, so I can only presume they’re staying there most of the day.

There are other changes I can conjecture:

1. There may have been an “acceleration” factor in Interestingness/Explore that has either been reduced or removed. If you got a lot of views/comments/faves in a short amount of time it would really bolster Interestingness. I am not sure I am seeing this effect any more. Since one of the advantages of the so-called “Explore Groups” was this acceleration, this could be the reason they have lost their dominance in Explore.

2. There must be some other reason why the Explore Groups are no longer represented so largely in Explore. If you look at the data, the Groups represented most in Explore (today it was Black and White and NikonD90) have 10 or less photos in Explore. In the heyday of the Explore Groups, the top groups had 30 or 40 or 50 pictures represented in Explore.

Are these Explore Groups somehow being BANNED?? Or their members??

Really really really doubt it. A more logical explanation is that Interestingness has somehow been modified with respect to the type of Groups you post to. If you look at the top 50 in Explore on any recent day, you’ll find most have either posted to no Group, or posted to a Group that is not a “popularity” contest.

So without being able to pinpoint the exact nature of the change, my advice is this: Post in less popular Groups! (and don’t post in too many)

3. Interestingness for any given image probably depends on the image’s relative popularity compared to other images in your stream. Historically this led to some pics with very modest stats (e.g. 30 views, 10 comments, 8 faves) to get into Explore–just because that image was so much more popular than others they had. I am not seeing this anymore, so I think this effect has been reduced—Interestingness is more absolute and less relative to what is in the rest of your stream.

4. I have conjectured before that Explore and Interestingness were related but not one in the same. I am less certain about this now. Maybe I was wrong, or maybe I was right but they’ve become more coupled.

5. Finally, I have no doubt that images that get posted to more Flickr Galleries get a higher Interestingness score. Galleries didn’t exist before these recent changes.

In my own case, there was a time when I got into Explore a lot; and then I didn’t because I wasn’t posting to the Explore Groups; and when I started doing what everyone else was doing I got into Explore again… and then Flickr changed and I didn’t and I didn’t get into Explore… and then I quit worrying about Groups and went back to my old behavior and am getting into Explore all the time again.

So here’s a reminder of the important things to do IF you care about a post’s Interestingness or Explore:

a. Post only Interesting photography.
b. Include camera data and locate on map. For longer term Interestingness, include descriptive title, text, and tags.
c. Maintain a vibrant Flickr network of contacts and friends that will view your posts.
d. Don’t post more than one or two images per day.
e. Post to less than ten Groups, at least initially; posting to less popular Group may increase Interestingness.
f. It’s not only views, comment, and faves that matter; Galleries and notes increase Interestingness also.

(Yes, this got into Explore)
